Desperately seeking a fine, small cruising sailboat to carry me in comfort and safety down the St. Lawrence River, the ICW and Florida Keys….would the Kent Ranger be a safe boat to do this in?

I think so. She is well built and strong. With her shoal keel, she’ll let you in and through shallow waters. If you get into a blow, you can reef and handle most storms. At least one of her sister ships has sailed around the world, but I think she is too small for that myself. Bruce

Well, I owned La Dolci Vida in San Diego about five years ago and thought I would chime in on the seaworthiness aspect.

The Kent Ranger 26 is not appropriate in offshore situations and I sure would not want to be in one in a gale! However, she is seaworthy for most coastal situations but I really want a bit more heft in a boat. You can expect her to be “tender” in winds over 15 knots and at first you have to get used to the fact that she heels over quickly. After that she remains fairly stable…..

We put 200lbs of lead in the bilge… which stiffened our Ranger 20 up nicely. I’ve had her out in 55 knot gale winds in a harbor with just a reefed main. She flew! But I would not want her out in open seas in that sort of blow. There is a Ranger26 that has sailed around the world. That’s more daring that I would care to be. 😉

    Drew here,
To David Rynning. Is your Ranger 26 still for sale. Is it the Dark blue Hull with the white deck shown above ?
Does it have a trailer ? How do I set up a time to see if still available. I am in Portland .

We are selling our 1981 KR 26 “Even Star”. Just posted on Craigslist Seattle (8/8/2016) for $8500. Boat is in good shape with many extras. Reason for sale is that we are purchasing a larger boat to better fit our needs. Boat is located @ Jim Clark Marina, Harbor Island, Seattle.

I am looking for a trailer for our KENT RANGER 26. If anyone you know has one please have them contact me at 360 774 2150. We now own EVEN STAR & are thoroughly enjoying her. Gary & Nancy Fredrick – Port Townsend. p.s. If someone has a trailer they would consider renting – we would be interested.

      Hi Gary!

Aw-Oh! I’m afraid you might have a good idea. Shoot… that means I might have to do something with it. 😉 I suppose I should find a good forum plugin… and add a forum. I’ve not looked at forum plug-ins for wordpress so I’ll need to do some research but it’s probably time to do this. I find the Yahoo groups list so difficult to find things that having a better alternative would be so helpful to people.

Thanks for the good idea and please whack me upside the head in a few weeks if I’ve not gotten back to it… I’m very full time with work and pretty slim on time to maintain and expand the site… as you can tell by my horendously long time in getting back to you!

Actively looking to purchase a Kent Ranger 26, any thoughts or leads would be appreciated. Thank you!

      Hi John,

The R26 is a great boat. Built for cruising, not racing, but if you get one with the tall rig and are not dragging a fixed prop in the water, she’ll do quite well in moderate air. With her drop center board for pointing she’ll even handle fairly nice to the wind. you won’t win races against boats half her weight in light air, but you’ll at least know that in strong wind and rough water, you’ll make it back to safe harbor. She is very thick hand laid woven glass at the water line and 3/4″ near the bow… Rigged like a 30′ boat and everything you see and touch feels solid and made to last. She handles nicely with the board down and yet slides into shallow waters when you want to, or didn’t expect to! ;-).

Her only short comings are her swing board design (which can be fixed by installing keepers) and the Stanchion Sheave that can, over time, fail (I have a replacement part for it available). Everything else about her is just really nice!

The Ranger 26 is a real gem of a boat and everyone who has one… has a very hard time parting with them. You’ll love yours if you decide to get one.

      I hope this helps!

      Bruce
